For both the Guard Cavalry and the Provincial Troops there is a main type listed (Cavalry or Medium/Heavy Polearm) as well as a replacement on the same line (Cats and Medium/Heavy Spearmen) labeled "Only Koguryo"
It is clear only Koguryo may use them.
However may Koguryo use the base troop type as well?
For example may Koguryo use Medium Cavalry Impact or Medium Swordsmen polearm subject to the total numerical limitation?
I tend to think yes but am unsure.
In other words does "Only Koguryo" mean "only Koguryo has access to these" or "Koguryo may only use these instead"? |

You are correct.
An example of how it's layed out the way you considered see list 71. Nobles vary by date in this case not by area/region/faction but it's the same method.
Hope this helps _________________ Player 747 don't call me Jumbo |

Koguryo may use base types as well for any or all of these.
These are not “replace all†just different options for the same line.
Basically it allows Koguryo to field up to 6 Guard Cataphracts instead of 4 and replace any (or none or all) of the Provincial Polearms with spears.
The note on allies (must contain at least 2 provincial or militia) is interesting. Does this mean you can take any 2 and that these then count as your 1 minimums for all 4 types of provincial and militia freeing you up to buy optional troops like Nobles, Horse Archers, Auxiliaries and Pikemen per the 3rd bullet on p 87 under Allied Corps? |

I do find this this interesting, if not a bit vague. I read it as you have to have a minimum of 4 mediocre militia 'some of which' can be upgraded to mixed 1/2 bow 1/2 sword, so somewhere between 1-3. Paekche after 375 allied with Silla and Koguryo so if you wish to increase the amount of Cataphract's for instance you just take an Ally Command, but I would have thought the trade off would be you have to adhere to the same limitations within the list i.e each Ally has to contain two militia or provincial troops in addition? |

My read on this is as follows.
There are 4 troops labeled as Provincial and Militia. Each one of them has a minimum number of 2. So as an Ally you are required to have a minimum of 1 of each.
But allies are not required to take troops with a minimum of one as long as no troops with a minimum of zero are taken as was pointed out by the reference to page 87
So this note seems to override that rule.
Even if you do not take any troops with a minimum of zero you are still required to take at least 2 of the 4 types.
And if you do take troops with a minimum of zero then you would still be compelled to take at least one of each 4.
In any case, an ally may replace up to 2 with mixed shooters |

That’s the part I’m not sure about. I think (but am by no means sure) the note here overrides the instruction on p 87, 3rd bullet. |

I'm pretty sure. If the list required minimum is 4, saying that you must have more than 2 would be meaningless. The prior requirement would always result in meeting the second.
So the specific note overrides page 87 which would otherwise allow none to be selected. |

The "Upgrade to elite (max 4)" in the Guard cavalry really ought to be "Upgrade to elite (max 4 in total)". Otherwise Koguryo could arguably upgrade two cavalry and upgrade four cataphracts.
Or perhaps "Cataphracts (max 4 unless Koguryo)" would work. |
