ABC facing up, X facing down. ABC are all in corner to corner contact.
AX
BC
The enemy has units that can shoot at A and B.
1. Can they do so? If they can only shoot at one of A or B due to support rules, who chooses which one, when, and is this binding on the subsequent melee and pursuit phases? (See p 56 4th bullet and p 60, Additional points, 3rd bullet.)
2. C routs X and must pursue. Who may also pursue with it? (See p 69 6th bullet and also p 60, Additional points, 3rd bullet. How do choices made in the shooting phase affect this?)
1. A
2. B
3. A and B
If the answer is 1 or 2 but not 3, when does this decision have to be made? Shooting phase, melee phase or pursuit phase?
Is “Sequence of play on p 60 and “Player-Sequence per page 23 or a “Phase and if a “Payer-Sequence during which phase (movement, shooting, melee or pursuit) does this have to be decided and declared? |

Which unit is in support.
This can come up a variety of ways.
The DT has instructed the rule as follows:
The owning player chooses which unit is in support. This declaration lasts until an action changes the situation.
So you declare a unit in support which renders it not an eligible shooter or recipient of missile fire. That unit continues as the support until someone moves or dies. |

Now as to point 2, who can go forward.
p 69, 6th bullet has a fuller definition that includes being aligned corner-to-corner. This is commonly taken to be front corner to front corner.
But i see your point in this very edge situation.
As the original victor is no longer in melee the pursuit rule seems to imply support after the enemy is removed.
I would assume that the previously declared support is no longer operative and we are back to a p69 support. |

So the 3rd bullet on p 60 saying “He can change this choice in each sequence of play. no longer applies, it’s now this cannot be changed until an action (move or rout) changes the situation. (My original question of exactly what a sequence of play obviously no longer applies.)
PS - I think the rule on p 60 should be (even though it is not) something like “All such units are treated as being in simple support for movement (interpenetration or potential uncontrolled advance targets), shooting and pursuit but a player may only benefit from one +1 bonus for support (simple) per flank. Realistically all these guys would be stabbing the nearby enemy unless ordered to move away but the army CiC (i.e. the player) would not be directing which lot of guys standing next to the enemy should stab them. |

I had not noticed that line.
I mis-remembered for v3 and forget this was put in for v4 because of this exact debate.
El Kraetor likes to have as few memory points as possible in general.
So the sequence of play as defined on p 23 implies "one per player".
So rule p 60, right column, additional points, 3rd bullet would appear that the owning player can change their mind each player sequence. |
