"Once we’ve established that an evade is NOT blocked we move on to the evade move rules. An evading unit encountering slowing terrain at any point along its evade path (regardless of how close that slowing terrain is) adjusts its move distance accordingly."
But the evade move rules do not actually say anything about slowing terrain.
Sometimes it's beneficial to submerge into terrain that slows the attacker more than you. Sometimes it's better to wheel and move out of the attacker's path. But what's best is to know beforehand how the ref will rule. |

As Madaxeman has said ad nauseum, the structure of the ADLG rules is general rules followed by special rules that may qualify/alter the general rules - i.e. you have to read them both together.
An evade is a Special Movement (pp.48 & 49). That means the general Movement rules (p.29) also apply unless over-ruled by the Special rules.
The general rules (p.29) clearly state that if a unit moves through different types of terrain it uses the lowest movement allowance as its maximum.
Nothing in the pp.48 & 49 evade Special Movement rules contradicts or over-rides this general rule.
After any initial reorientation, and after discounting any blocked move obstacles that prevent the evade, an evading unit moves in a straight line taking into account mixed terrain types crossed and its VMD roll. If the evading unit encounters an obstacle en route, Special sliding/wheeling rules apply.
In the case of no obstacles en route, if the evading unit made an initial quarter or half turn to first reorientate before its straight line evade move, the general movement rule that permits a 1 UD slide during moves does not apply due to the p.30 restriction, bullet one. |

Thanks for that. It helps. Two points:
[1] It's now clear if a trifle convoluted. It's no surprise people get confused. Rules are clear. Presentation not so much.
[2] As far as the evade is concerned, I note that an obstacle on p48 is different from that defined on p67. Doesn't help.
One further question though as I'm confused. P48 says:
| Citation: | | After any change in orientation, the evading unit has ..... situated less than 1UD directly ahead that cannot be avoided by a slide of one UD or less. |
Why is it written this way? If the reorientation involves a turn, sliding is not allowed as per p30 and without a slide the evade is blocked even if avoidance by a slide is possible. I realise that if the unit was charged on it's rear this isn't a problem but this is the least common event (frontal > flank> rear). Surely, the charge on the rear is the special case (exception) here? _________________ Martin Stephenson

p67 obstacles refer clearly to the purchased quasi-fortification.
This topic has been answered. |

Z, my point is not that deep. Simply noting that the text on pages 48-9 does not say you must enter terrain, nor that you must try to avoid it, nor that you can pick and choose.
But it does say you cannot contact the enemy camp and ignores the friendly camp, while both seem completely covered by page 66 bullet 3. It does add several rules about the table edge.
Now it does only apply avoidance to "obstacles". And if you accept that obstacles are any and only the 3 categories listed at the top of page 48 (including the obvious inclusion of Cv(light chariots) in Difficult), then you have an answer. But AdlG lists are not always exclusive, and the immediate reference to attempting to avoid rough and difficult is confusing.
So whatever the answer, it's clearly a legit Frequently Asked Question. |

I'm pretty sure the p30 prohibition only refers to normal movement. The limitations are all spelled out for Charge movement. If there was a limitation on evasion, one would expect to see it integrated in bullets 4 and 5 on page 49. |

I was thrown by this comment:

Sorry about that! What I meant was: the rules for an evader's slide are spelled out in section 5, pp48-49. |
