Umm, well I have to agree with the French guys that when Conforming (or moving), you can only use legal movements; ie forward wheels and slides, not backwards . . .

However, the bigger question is whether a unit can Conform after moving into a support position. I based my inference on the initial sentence which speaks of lining units up for melee resolution, not merely getting into position.
I agree that this needs clarification.

Either way, I don't see how this 'increases geometric issues' over those that already exist. Indeed, I would have thought the 'free' slide at the end of the move actually makes things easier.

There is no problem for the unit to conform in the situation described in the first message.

When a unit contact an ennemy, it can then pivot/slide/move in order to align with the ennemy.

The simple option is always the best way !

1) Une unité peut se conformer quand elle se déplace pour soutenir une autre unite
2) Lorsque se conforme, une unité peut pivoter à la fois vers l'arrière et vers l'avant.

(For greater clarity, are you saying that
1) A unit can conform when it moves to support another unit
2) When conforming, a unit can wheel both backwards as well as forwards)
