In army list 172 (Normans) The conquest of England (1066) option has 1/3 to 2/3 of the milites be spearmen.

Does this ratio apply to the milites you actually buy or the number you could buy.

For example if it is the number I buy then if I have 12 Milites in my army 3 to 6 of them must be spearmen the rest medium knights. So an army with 9 Med Knights and 3 heavy armored spearmen would be legal but one with 10 Med Knights and 2 spearmen would not be legal.

If it is the number I could buy (1/3 to 2/3 applies to min/max) then if I have 12 milites in my army I could have 2 heavy armored spearmen and 10 knights (1/3 of the min of 6 milites is 2 spearment.

I think the first interpretation makes the most sense, but it is a little vague.

More specifically to the Norman army can I have the 1066 strategist (William) but not be the Conquest of England Army. William decides to invade the Franks instead Smile.

I think William does not have to be invading England and can therefore be bought without the army in England.

I had always designed my list as 1/3- 2/3 of what I bought. But I think on reflection it is probably a change in what you may buy as you outline.

It has to be the fraction of the number you buy.
Otherwise it would be between two numbers as other lists
Ie from 5 to 7 say.
2/3 of 12 is 8 just for the record.

William the bastarx was no strategist in the years before and after the initial invasion.
So I would find it a stretch to think he may have been elsewhere. His desperation and those with him at Hastings may give the impression of a temporary strategist.

1/3 to 2/3 of what you bought is what I decided to do (I even did the math correctly Very Happy ).

With your William assertion, perhaps he should not be a strategist, but in the rules he is given that ability in 1066.

I guess the question becomes is the Conquest of England Army, which is only available in 1066 meant to be the only army list available in 1066? If yes then in is the only army that can have a strategist. I kind of think that is the intent, but it could be a lot clearer.
