Has anyone tried something more like Impetus-style basing with AdG? i.e. something that offers a more visually attractive army/game that comes from more diorama-style basing (usually twice as wide per unit than AdG)...
Cheers. |

Well that requires twice the table space. essentially turning a 40mm square area into an 80mm square area. It also increases the number of figures needed.
One of the big advantages we are seeing is the lower figure count is making it easier for new (or occasional) players to join. Also a lot of people with large collections have an incentive to not morph and assemble a new army.
That said, if you put 15mm (times 1-1/2 figures) on a 25 mm base and it looked cool, you might have some takers. |

Yes, fair points there.
Would deeper cavalry bases create a problem with the rules?
Olicana's post on TMP showed what can be done with deeper dynamic bases for cavalry (might not work with AdG though):

No going to square bases is fine. |

Could that extend to most infantry too?

apart from LI, who need to be on DBx sized bases it would be fine as long as you could distinguish the different troop types.
If you do want to diorama stuff, I'd second HB's suggestion of going with 15mm (or even 10mm... or even 6mm!) figures on the 60mm-wide "25mm" base sizes. Then you would still be compatible with other players 25mm armies and you can play the game on a normal 6x4 table as well - and you may not even need to go to all square bases as as 60mm x 40mm is still a decent size to fit a fair few 15mm or smaller figures onto anyway.
People using 80mm square seems pretty rare - as in, Ive not seen any pics posted anywhere of it _________________ www.madaxeman.com |

At the moment I'm thinking of possibly just deepening the cavalry bases slightly (3cm to 4cm in 15mm, and 4cm to 6cm in 28mm) to give extra room to achieve a more dynamic arrangement of the figures. Still pondering the value of deepening infantry bases to match...
(see my post on TMP about how AdG 'units' can look as good as Impetus units: http://theminiaturespage.com/rules/boards/msg.mv?id=1226)

Hi Snowcat,
This has been exactly my thought on the basing. I'd also like to play Basic Impetus so I want a basing system that will work for both games.
After test fitting I've decided on 50mm depth for Cav, El, Chariots.
A Basic Impetus army is about the equivalent of a 100 points army in LADG. So using 2 x 40mm wide LADG bases to make 1 x 80mm BI base works out nicely. |

Hi there
We get around don't we?
I'm currently leaning towards 40mm depth for most infantry and all cavalry in 15mm. I think it might look nice and neat that way. Close order infantry ranks could be grouped a little closer together than loose order, and be positioned centrally on the 40mm deep base (so leaving a bit of space in front and behind them).
But I'm still pondering this at the moment.

Those knights look great on the 50% deeper bases. Thanks for posting - confirmed my thoughts nicely.

Hi,
For 25-28 mm tournament some players use deeper base for mounted units.
Y think it'll be only because horses are too long. For ideal game, all the bases would be square. _________________ Hasta la victoria Siempre!

Whiskey for me. And 40mm bases for most things. Lovely.
