If only it was as easy as that. The steps are:
- Prime dark grey.
- Black undercoat - thin coat.
- Block in base colour - leave a black edge.
- Correct shape of block with black.
- Highlight - leave an edge of base colour and in folds etc.
- Repeat until all colours done.
The trick is to use the highlight#1/base#1/black/base#2/highlight#2 bandings to give definition between colours on different parts of the figure and highlight#1/base#1/base#2/highlight#2 to define areas where black gives just too strong a difference like multi-coloured helmets and shield designs.. The eye converts both of these in to a strong border effect.

Overall, I aim for cartoon like figures, I am heavily influenced by 60-70 comic art, and because of this I will use black to create the right shape whether the figure provides it or not.

Me neither. 
Try this: imagine you are painting triangle. It's four-ish strokes: one from the apex down the right, ditto down the left, the third stroke fills in the middle. Repeat with highlight if required then the fourth stroke is with black across the base of the triangle to produce a straight edge.
I have found that I cannot paint a line of uniform thickness but I can paint a straight line if I don't have to worry about the second edge of the brushstroke.
