Hi guys,
A couple of questions from someone fairly new to the game.
A unit of LMI behind Fortifications vs Heavy Sword. Are the Heavy Sword at +2? The fortification rules state that LI contacted by Heavies aren't counted as being in the Open, what about LMI and the resultant combat factors?
Can troops arriving from a flank march declare a charge?
Cheers,
Matt |

Heavy swordsmen + 2 against LMI in open terrain no impact or furious charge
LMI + 1 ( FF)
LI ARE in open BUT are not destroyed and fight at 0 (p60 7th bullet)
for the unit in flank march YES they can, as far as the ennemy unit who where witihn 4 UD did not flew too far or were in melee. _________________ "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead"

Thanks for that.
In a related question, if you play at a club where flank marches are common and you are worried about your march being driven back, what would be a 'safe' size? When people design a command to be one where flank marching is possible is it 4 elements in size? 6? 10? |

If flank marches are common I;d not do them at all, but drive up the middle of the table at high speed with strike troops IMO. Flank marching troops don't count towards the break point, and most games last 7 turns or less so with flank marchers unable to arrive until turn 2 at the very earliest, or most likely turns 3-4, an arms race towards bigger and bigger flank marches looks like a fantastic reason not to do any at all. _________________ www.madaxeman.com |

I would have thought flank marchers could charge any enemy unit who are within their movement distance PRIOR to fleeing from the table edge. The unit only flees once a flank march enemy appears on the table edge, which would be the start of the charge. |

The ennemy unit on the table flee if they're at 4 UD or less of an incoming flank march unit.
so basically:
1 The flank march player roll dice for ihis orders.
2 He attribute CP to one group and place it on the edge of the table.
3 All ennemy unit at 4 UD of this group flee if they can.
4 The flank march player move the incoming group, eventually with another CP for march move.
5 Go to 2 until no more CP are available. _________________ Audentes fortuna iuvat. |

I think there are two fundamental types of flank marches.
1) An army designed with a small Corps 2-3 Heavy units and 1-3 light units.
2) A battlefield layout that prompts an otherwise main Corps to flank march and is a moment of opportunity. This Corps is probably in the 6-8 unit range.
I would never plan an army design to cope with 2. |

Spot on. Flank marches are a big gamble in AdlG that rarely arrive when you want them, and practically never make a contribution to the game.
That said, using a small (4 unit) corps to hide on-table in an on-table 'flank march' is a much better option. To do this you keep this formation off-table, and throw a dice for this command as you would for a flank-march (ie first command roll each turn). The corps does not need to use the Command Pips if your want to keep them hidden, and can be revealed when you want (unless it is discovered first). |
