Here is the situation. AA and BB are on the same side. AA and ZZ have side to side contact, ZZ and BB are in front to front contact.
It is ZZ's turn.
AA|ZZ
....|BB
ZZ destroys BB and can pursue. Because ZZ and AA are in side to side contact, can ZZ opt to conform to AA instead of pursuing?
Page 56, paragraph 1 and 2 reads: "After a rout or disengage move a unit may still be in contact with the enemy without being in melee or in a position to support a friend in melee: front corner against front corner or side by side for example." "The phasing player is allowed to conform such units without expending CP."
This seems pretty clear that ZZ conforms if it wishes, but I have not seen this handled this way in our area. |

I rather would say "no".
It is intended for units in the MOVE phase, that have routed their ennemy in the preceding ROUT phase.
ZZ must conform to AA only if the front of AA is in contact ("prise de flanc" in french). Otherwise, a flank/flank contact does not authorize to conform in the PURSUIT phase. So in the next turn AA will 1/4 turn and contact ZZ on the flank, ZZ can evade if possible, or will fight at 0 (but no loss of cohesion since not in combat on its front) _________________ Audentes fortuna iuvat. |

NO. THe section you are reading is not in the pursuit section.
See FAQ p 18 quote here:
Timing of conformation
Citation: | Q : When can the units conform ?
A : Conformation can happen in 4 cases :
Just after a charge, to align with the enemy.
Just after a melee if a unit routs the opponent on its front and there is another opponent whose front is in contact with the unit’s flank or rear (as per p54). The conformation then replaces the pursuit. During a pursuit, if the pursuer contacts a new enemy. If that new unit is not automatically destroyed there are 2 alternative situations: 1. If the enemy contacted is not in melee, the enemy must conform immediately with the front of the pursuer, 2. If the enemy contacted is already engaged in melee, the pursuer immediately conforms, either supporting the friend in melee, or contacting the flank / rear of the enemy according to the axis of the pursuit (see support, page 50).
In the movement phase of the player’s turn, to align with an opponent with which it is already in contact (for instance flank against flank, or corner against corner). This is detailed on p55 (Conforming after a melee). This conformation replaces the charge, which can’t take place because the units are already in contact. |
So your example would occur "during a pursuit" it is not one of the two examples. |

Agreed Dan.Â
The key question is the orientation of unit AA with respect to ZZ. - Where AA is flank to flank contact, as per the question, then ZZ may / must pursue.Â
- Where AA is facing ZZ and was thus one of the opponents, then ZZ must conform and may not pursue because it is ‘still in contact with one of its opponents’ per p62.
