OK this came up today. Not sure what would take precedence:
We have two rows of troops (X and Y) at 45 degrees, with 25mm between them:
______1
________X
______X
____X_2_Y
______Y
____Y
______Z
Z is light troop that is charged and evades directly upwards. It's evade move puts it on top of the middle Y and thus it interpenetrates Y and moves further up. But it does not fit between X and Y unless it turn 45 degrees.
So, does Z a) respect the evade rule and continue its direction and moves until it clears all of X ending in position 1 OR b) does it obey interpenetration rule and move the "minimum distance required" and turn 45 degrees placing it between X and Y, position 2?
Thoughts? |

Can it partially pass through X with its full evade move?
If so, then it would adjust by the minimum. It's nor really "deviating" from the evade direction.
If it can't then it must slide and wheel to avoid the obstacle, so it would end up between X and Y. |

Hi Ian...I'd say either is possible, but you should select the option that results in the light troop being as far as possible from the charging unit.

So the first issue is: Light troops.
Do you mean light infantry or light cavalry?
Light Cavalry will have to wheel or slide immediately as they can not go through at an angle. so they will if the Y unit is mounted they will wheel through that and continue at that angle or slide at start.
For LI i do not think the wheel will be the effect as if goes straight and is in the middle of a unit it then finishes clearing and pushes friends. p 39 |

Hmmm…..I had read the 1st and 3rd bullets (p 39, right side) as saying light troops do not push friends to make room but instead make the minimum additional move to clear the unit they end up on top of. This is because I had read the 3rd bullet (“In other cases….) as saying lights and generals don’t displace units they can’t fully clear. |

Dan sometimes types fast Kevin.
If the LI does end up "in the middle" of a unit the interpenetration is not allowed in the first place. Page 39 "Adjusting Positions" first paragraph. First sentence.
If the LI at least partially reaches the other side (as seems likely give the 45 degree angle here) then as you say per the first bullet the LI is pushed forward, friends are not pushed back.
The essence of the original question is the LI pushed all the way forward through the second line or does it instead wheel into the gap. |

I believe Steve is correct here.Â
To interpenetrate a unit, the moving unit must be able to pass through the stationary unit at least partially. If this cannot be done, interpenetration is forbidden.Â
If the LI manage to get part of their front past the rear of the first unit, the LI would be advanced to clear that unit placing it on / over the second unit.Â
If the front of the LI now partly clears the rear edge of this second unit, then it gets placed behind the second unit. However, if the LI cannot clear this unit, it may not interpenetrate at all, so is returned to the front of the first unit. |

Wouldn't the third dot point P39 right hand column come into play then instead ? |
